RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT, ON EMPTY: By Will Leitch.
Will Leitch gives you 14 pages, I clicked the space between the elevator and the arrow controls on my browser to check, of political commentary about the Democratic contenders for President.

I gotta run, but after skimming the article, it seems that he gives a lot of space to Dennis Kucinich.

The Pilot Project: Where you create the TV show.

It's like a Project Greenlight for TV.

Family Guy: When You Wish Upon a Weinstein.
I just saw this Family Guy episode that never aired on TV.

They say it might have been offensive to Jews if it aired. Well let me tell you, I'm offended that it never aired!

I saw it at the Lizard Lounge, at The Other Network showing hosted by Kim Davis.

Family Guy, Vol. 2 [ warning: amazon.com link ] is coming out on DVD on September 9, 2003, so make sure you buy this DVD. It has When You Wish Upon a Weinstein on it!

Also showing tonight was Bad Haircut by Tom Perotta and Rob Greenburg. Another failed TV pilot that should have been picked up as a series on some forward thinking cable network like Spike TV.

Tom also wrote Election. This pilot was based on a chapter from his book Bad Haircut: Stories of the Seventies [ warning: that's an amazon.com link too ].

Ads in a Blog.
Amazon recently sent me an email telling me that they had an easy new way to put ads on my site.

I figured that I'd try it out. Sort of a test market.

I've gotten my first feedback from John Walkenbach. It's not good.
I'm a regular reader of Steve Garfield's Off On a Tangent blog. More accurately, I used to be a regular reader of that blog. It is now so bogged down with "context sensitive" Amazon ads that it's not worth the effort anymore.

Good luck Steve. I'm barraged with enough advertising every day, and I don't care to see it when I read blogs.
UPDATE:
Context sensitive links to amazon.com are no longer featured on the blog.

Amazon told me that they are very successful, but my experience using them for a day has proven otherwise.

For those of you who are interested, I stashed all the ads over here. Maybe that's a better place for them anyway.

Please come back John!

UPDATE:
John's back!
No More Ads In a Blog

Man, am I ever influential!

This morning I complained about the Amazon ads that cluttered up the Off On a Tangent blog. And now, based in large part to my comments, Steve has removed the ads. Good move, Steve. The small amount of money you would have made just isn't worth the clutter.

Jamaica Plain 1928 License Plate T-Shirt Store.
Mr. George A. Parker was appointed Registrar in 1928 and was quickly embroiled in a conflict with Massachusetts fishermen. It was in 1928 that a depiction of a codfish, symbol of the Massachusetts fishing industry, was the first picture to appear on a plate. The image, which resembled an oversized guppy more than a codfish, sparked controversy among local fishermen. After suffering one of the worst years in fishing history, the fishermen blamed the RMV for representing the cod swimming away from the word "Massachusetts" which was printed on the plates. The controversial image was removed from passenger plates in 1929 and a more realistic and detailed codfish shown swimming toward Massachusetts appeared on truck plates in that same year.

NOBODY KNOWS: CHRONICLE OF AN UNSIGNED BAND
World Premiere! Wednesday July 23 @ 8:00 at the Allston Cinema
Gordon, Joe, Jordan and Pete are four very different young Boston-area musicians who unite as Fooled By April to bring their energetic brand of power pop-rock to any stage, any audience, anyone who will listen. As they prepare for the 2003 South by Southwest Music Festival and possible impending stardom, the boys deal with the rigors of life on the road - driving hours to play empty bars, neglected girlfriends, loneliness and enough insecurity and doubt to fill a stadium. Will they survive the pressures of rock anonymity and make their major label dreams come true? (2003) dir. Brendan Clarke, 1h22m
I went and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It played at the Allston Cinema Underground which has two theaters at the Allston Cinema. One is now the Bombay Cinema 2 playing Bollywood films from India and the other is the Allston Cinema Underground playing cult, outré, and extreme foreign cinema films selected by Clinton McClung of the Coolidge Theater.

This documentary was great. It really told a story with a beginning, middle and end.

Each member of the band has a strong personality, which helped keep the film interesting.

These guys are quite the characters and play good music too.

The lighting and sound weren't the greatest at different points, but the content of the film overcame it's technical shortcomings.

Installing Der Bike Computer 500.
Back when I was a kid we just hooked up a speedometer/odometer to the front tire and we were all set.

These days you have to program a computer.

Here's a tip if you get the Sigma Sport BC 500 Bike Computer
:

When you get to wheel size, read the number on the side of the tire.

My numbers are 26 x 2.125 which corresponds to a setting 1325 in the WS mph setting!

I installed the whole thing on my bike and then it started to thunder.

But I hadn't tried out the new bike computer.

So I took the bike for a spin, risking life and limb, and the bike computer registered 0.00 MPH.

Oh Oh.

Something's wrong.

I just watched the installation video and it conflicts with the installation manual. The video shows the sensor farther down the spokes. I'll have to change that.

Update:
I moved the sensor down lower and everything seems to be working fine. I'll take the bike out for a spin tomorrow to confirm.

Right now I need to send an email to Sigma Sport in Germany to tell them that their installation manual is wrong.

Update:
Here the response I got from Sigma Sport:

It can be mounted anywhere on the spoke & fork as long as it is 1/4" or less from the magnet to the transmitter.

Boston eyes new voting system.
Boston's Election Department wants voters to begin using new, optical scan voting machines in the Sept. 23 preliminary election, shelving the 900-pound lever machines that have recorded city's ballots since James Michael Curley was in office.
Wow. Exciting.

Boston wants to move from mechanical voting machines to paper ballots.

AccuVote-OS [ image ]
Boston chose AccuVote-OS, an optical scan system made by Diebold Election Systems of North Canton, Ohio. The machines generally cost about $6,000 each.
Couldn't we pick up a few Macintosh iBooks for that amount, or a bundle of Dell notebooks.

AccuVote-TS [ image ]

Since Boston is already working with AccuVote, why don't they take a look at their interactive touch-screen system, AccuVote-TS?

Try their system online.

I tried it.

On a Macintosh using Safari:
When you click the review ballot button the ballot is redisplayed and is blank, all my votes are gone.

On a Macintosh using Internet Explorer:
When you click the review ballot button the ballot is a black page.

On a Macintosh using Camino:
It works fine.

Now I see how voting over the internet from home could be problematic.

The Squirrels Ate My Internet!
First, the damn squirrels tried to eat their way into my house. They actually did that, and we had to call the squirrel guy to set up a cage and trap them and take them to a meadow in western Massachusetts.

Then we put up a screen to keep them from eating the tasty part of our house.

Next, the birds tried to make a house in the place where the squirrels used to like to hang out. I guess it seemed safe up there since hte suirrels had left town. We had the bird guy come over and put up some wire to keep the birds away.

Then my internet connection started to drop out on me. All of a sudden I'd have no internet access. So I called Comcast and ended up talking to a guy in Newfoundland. He was patient while my computer rebooted.

In the end, he dispatched a Comcast guy to come over and take a look.

He just left.

Diagnosis: the squirrels were eating my internet!

I bet those squirrels we kicked out to western Mass sent a message to their city squirrel relatives to eat my internet cables.

Well I have new internet cables now, and we left the old ones up there so the squirrels could eat them and not disturb my new lines.

Yes, I am writing again, and it's only been a couple of days. It's so amazing how much my life has changed in the past year, since I first starting writing on this site. One reason I was able to write so much more last year is because I sucked and no one wanted me for anything. I had a good year and now I barely have time to workout, let alone keep up with this site. I am also a lot happier and at peace with myself. Instead of staying home bored, working on my site, I am out doing new things, traveling the country, talking about social anxiety disorder, and actually doing stuff: cool stuff like going to the movies, daily visits to Wild Oats, and even an occasional trip to the mall. These things might seem normal to you, but before coming here to Miami, they were hardly bearable.

The Monkey Bike Workshop makes a small motorcycle that can be disassembled, put in a bag and stowed in your boot (the trunk of your car) .

Boot is English for trunk.

ScooterMan is and English company that uses Monkey Bike's Puzzle Bike to go pick up drunk people and drive them home. The ScooterMan stashes the Puzzle Bike in the boot of the drunk person's car, and after delivering them to their home, the ScooterMan puts the Puzzle Bike back together and drives away!

I saw this on Dave Attell's Insomniac on Comedy Central.
