Remembering Ted Kennedy - TV Coverage

It's interesting to take a look at the amount of screen real estate each of the TV stations use to brand thier broadcast.

WBZ is the cleanest.

FOX NEWS and MSNBC are the messiest.

MTV has the smallest branding but is showing Real World Cancun. "It's all about ME."

Tivo HD seems to freeze and not respond to remote for periods of time

TiVo HD Remote

My TiVo HD remote isn't responding to input.

It's inconsistent.

The response to certain button depressions is erratic.

I went over to the TiVo forums and see that others are experiencing the same issue. Seems to have recently started.

Customer help forums -- TiVo:

mb2foru seems to have figured out what it might be:
Re: Tivo HD seems to freeze and not respond to remote for periods of time:

The remote does not respond almost all the time when cable cards are in and loaded. No cards loaded and you can use the remote endlessly but once the data is loaded in the cards the remote is then dead. It is definatley overloaded OS or hardware issue. I am an telecomunications engineer for 25 years and have worked on ATM, fiber and all kinds of data delivery systems and software. While the other issues you mentioned can and do happen this issue is definatley a problem with Tivo as it is occurring in huge numbers of the HD boxes. Tivo needs to respond to this issue now.
Any help or ideas?

Update:

Margret Schmidt, @tivodesign on twitter solved my problem almost immediately after I posted a message on twitter with a link to this post.

Sometimes you can get sidetracked by technical issues when it ends up being as simple as replacing batteries. The TiVo HD takes four AAA, but I only had two in the house. So I replaced two, and also closed the laptop that was in the same room.

The remote is now responsive. Thanks for the fast response.

Twitter: Peripheral Awareness + Social Grooming

Chris Brogan is Addicted to Twitter

apophenia: Twitter: 'pointless babble' or peripheral awareness + social grooming?:
"I vote that we stop dismissing Twitter just because the majority of people who are joining its ranks are there to be social. We like the fact that humans are social. It's good for society. And what they're doing online is fundamentally a mix of social grooming and maintaining peripheral social awareness. They want to know what the people around them are thinking and doing and feeling, even when co-presence isn't viable. They want to share their state of mind and status so that others who care about them feel connected. It's a back-and-forth that makes sense if only we didn't look down at it from outter space. Of course it looks alien. Walk into any typical social encounter between people you don't know and it's bound to look a wee bit alien, especially if those people are demographically different than you."

Is Twitter Going to Break Retweeting?

Kristina GrifantiniDanah BoydSusan HerringDan ZarellaSteve Garfield

Kristina Grifantini writes for Technology Review: The Evolution of Retweeting:
"Last week, Twitter announced that it will soon implement a button that will let users automatically repost someone else's tweet. While this will make it quicker and easier for users to accurately retweet, the mockup of the new button does not appear to let users edit the retweet, so that commentary can be incorporated. Rather, the 'retweet' button will add the image and name of the quoted person to the original tweet and post it for those who follow the retweeter."
Grifantini interviewed me over the phone for the article, and she even emailed me the quote she was going to use to make sure it was accurate. You hardly ever see that. Thanks Kristina.

Here's my quote about retweeting:
In addition to showing the original tweeter's image, the new Twitter button will also show the latest 20 retweets of a post. "If they show the breadcrumbs of the trail of everyone who retweeted, that's a good thing," says Steve Garfield, a new media advisor to several large companies and prolific video blogger. "I like to add value to my retweets by adding a comment, to tell people why I like it." If the new function doesn't allow for comments, Garfield says users will just design a new way or revert to the old way.

Health Care Debate Ignores Euthanasia Legalization Question

Both sides of the health care reform debate are treating Euthanasia like it's a taboo subject.

The Republicans are scaring people into thinking that the government will be setting up death panels to decide who lives and dies based on how much of an economic burden they are later in life.

The Democrats are responding by stating the fact that Euthanasia is not in the health care reform bill.

Both sides are sidestepping what should really be debated, the legalization of Euthanasia.

Now is a good time to talk about Euthanasia.

Learn more.

"As of 2009, some forms of active euthanasia are legal in Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Thailand, and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington."

This is from the White House:

Melody Barnes, the President's Director of the Domestic Policy Council, debunks the malicious myth that reform would encourage or even require euthanasia for seniors.

Twitter Breaks Links

Why does twitter shorten the link on posts where link doesn't need to be shortened?

I used bit.ly to make a decriptive link, and twitter changed it from http://bit.ly/BlameDrewDatehMusic to http://bit.ly/BlameDrewDate....

The link still works when you are on twitter, but when someone copies the link manually and then retweets it, the link breaks.

Details:

Twitter changed the link on my post, from this:

Blame Drew's Cancer: The Music Video by Paul Dateh http://bit.ly/BlameDrewDatehMusic #blamedrewscancer

To this:

Blame Drew's Cancer: The Music Video by Paul Dateh http://bit.ly/BlameDrewDate... #blamedrewscancer

On twitter, the link works, until someone retweets it, by copying and pasting the tweet into a new post, then it breaks.

Broken link:

melissapierce RT @stevegarfield: Blame Drew's Cancer: The Music Video by Paul Dateh http://bit.ly/BlameDrewDate.. #blamedrewscancer i know amazing ppl

I blame Drews Cancer

Update:

Example #2:

Original post:
stevegarfield#blamedrewscancer Music Video http://bit.ly/BlameDrewDatehMusic

Twitter shortened:
stevegarfield#blamedrewscancer Music Video http://bit.ly/BlameDrewDate...

Note: This shortend link works at twitter.com, but will break if someone manually copies and pastes it to retweet it.

Example #3:
Original post:
stevegarfield#blamedrewscancer Music Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHDiurJY3lg

Twitter shortened:
stevegarfield#blamedrewscancer Music Video http://bit.ly/nSFfW
I don't understand why twitter feels the need to shorten that YouTube link. and note the shortened URL, nSFfW. Weird.

I know twitter is working on incorporating the retweet function. I hope they makes things better and not worse. I also hope that when retweeting, we'll be able to add editorial comments to retweets.

Blame Drew's Cancer: The Music Video by Paul Dateh

Paul Dateh has written an original song, and recorded and performed it on YouTube, to support my friend Drew Olanoff in his fight against cancer.

Paul describes the video:
Please help my friend @drew beat the crap out of cancer. use tag #BlameDrewsCancer on twitter and join the fight. get all the details at http://blamedrewscancer.com

Get the mp3 of this song for free at http://pauldateh.bandcamp.com/track/blame-drews-cancer
Drew watched the video for the first time on a plane and tweeted:

Just watched @pauldateh's "blame drew's cancer" music video. I cried on the plane. The lady next to me asked to move. Nice.

I just happily paid $25 for @pauldateh's Blame Drew's Cancer Song. You can download a version for free, or pay more to get a better quality. It's freemium.

Update:
Paul Dateh donated the $25 I gave him to Livestrong.

Chis Brogan and Julien Smith are Trust Agents

Chis Brogan and Julien Smith are Trust Agents

Chris Brogan is making a big push for his book, Trust Agents. On his blog he says he needs 768 sales of his book before Saturday.

I asked him why. He's ahead of me in publishing his book and I'm interested in the behind the scenes workings of the best seller lists. Where does the #768 come from and why Saturday?

My book, Get Seen, comes out later this year.

At 9:10 AM his book is # 605 in Best Sellers in Books on Amazon.com

Let's watch during the day to see it climb.

Update: 12:08 PM #55 in Books on Amazon.com

Update: 9:24 PM #32 in books!

ABC News did a report called Secrets of the Amazon Best-Seller List. In it they explain:
Amazon is a "long tail" retailer. At the very top-- rankings No. 1 to No. 10-- a book could be selling 3,000 to 10,000 copies a week through the Internet retailer. So all it takes is, say, 500 to 1,000 copies manhandled through the system on a single day to get your book into the top ranks.
If you are heading over to Amazon.com today, consider pre-ordering a copy of my book too. ;-) My Amazon.com Sales Rank: #686,344 in Books. :-)

Update: 9:24 PM

My book is now Amazon.com Sales Rank: #75,874 in Books

Thanks Chris!

Barack Obama Has it Wrong on End of Life Care

Photo by Ashley Rose CC BY-NC-ND

Barack Obama talks about end of life care in an interview with David Leonhardt of the New York Times. Published: April 28, 2009.
THE PRESIDENT: Exactly. And I just recently went through this. I mean, I’ve told this story, maybe not publicly, but when my grandmother got very ill during the campaign, she got cancer; it was determined to be terminal. And about two or three weeks after her diagnosis she fell, broke her hip. It was determined that she might have had a mild stroke, which is what had precipitated the fall.

So now she’s in the hospital, and the doctor says, Look, you’ve got about — maybe you have three months, maybe you have six months, maybe you have nine months to live. Because of the weakness of your heart, if you have an operation on your hip there are certain risks that — you know, your heart can’t take it. On the other hand, if you just sit there with your hip like this, you’re just going to waste away and your quality of life will be terrible.

And she elected to get the hip replacement and was fine for about two weeks after the hip replacement, and then suddenly just — you know, things fell apart.

I don’t know how much that hip replacement cost. I would have paid out of pocket for that hip replacement just because she’s my grandmother. Whether, sort of in the aggregate, society making those decisions to give my grandmother, or everybody else’s aging grandparents or parents, a hip replacement when they’re terminally ill is a sustainable model, is a very difficult question. If somebody told me that my grandmother couldn’t have a hip replacement and she had to lie there in misery in the waning days of her life — that would be pretty upsetting.
With only months to live, electing to have hip replacement surgery seems illogical to me.

If you have a terminal illness, and your health starts failing, there needs to be an end of life option for patients.

With all the controversy around allowing doctors to talk to patients about end of life care, I'm wondering how euthenasia will ever be able to be discussed.

Pavlov Gone Horribly Wrong: Three Bells at ATM

Three Bells at ATM
Originally uploaded by stevegarfield
In the lobby of the Bank of America all you hear is constant ringing of the bells. Bells are ringing all the time but don't always indicate that an action needs to be taken by the ATM customer.

In this example, the light starts flashing and then the bells starts ringing, but the paper receipt only comes out on the third bell ring.

If the Bank of America wants to train us to do some activity at the sound of a bell, they need to reinforce that activity by dispensing a receipt when the bell rings and should not just start ringing the bell early.

Without Paula Abdul, How are the American Idol Season 9 audition shows going to work?

The American Idol Season 9 auditions already happened in Denver, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Orlando.

I saw Ryan at the Boston audition at Gillette Stadium.

Was Paula Abdul there? Were the other judges there? Were they at the other auditions? Did they tape the auditions in front of a panel of judges like previous seasons? If so, who were they and what will we see this season?

There are so many who try out, the producers audition all the people in a first round. We don't see those auditions. The film crew takes lots of B-Roll of wide shots of the stadiums full of people.

Then, the judges fly in for another round of judging on another day when they call back those that were selected from the first round of auditions.

That's how the American Idol Season 9 audition shows are going to work. Right?

Right.

What To Expect At An American Idol Audition Casting Call:
We’ve already exposed the falsifications of the audition process in our expose The Truth About American Idol Auditions. In case you haven’t read that story, the auditions take place over many weeks. The first auditions (the ones advertised by Idol) are just a casting call where you sing in groups of four for a producer. You are given the green light to advance or you’re sent home from there. You’re then called back multiple times in the future, up to a month or two later, to see producers and possibly the celebrity judges. Only about 50-100 people from each city see the celebrity judges, and that’s after lots of weeding. The producers ask the contestants to continue to wear the same clothing to each audition though so that they can pretend it all happened in one day.

New Media/Social Media Conference: Podcamp Boston 4 is this Weekend

Podcamp Boston 4 is this weekend. Podcamp is a great conference. It started in Boston and it's unlike those conferences where you sit for 4 hours and listen to people up on a stage present things. It's participatory where session moderators do an 18 minute or less introduction then open it up to the audience for discussion.

These discussions are not the standard questions from the audience disucssions, the attendees also become presenters. There are also rooms available for attendees to schedule their own sessions at the venue. It's an unconference.

I'll be helping to moderate two sessions on video:

SAT 4 PM - 4:45 PM Room 2-540
Where is video online going and where will it end?

Moderators: Skip Bensley, Robert Collins, Joselin Mane and Matthew Mamet

SUN 11:15 AM - 12 PM Room 3-540
What equipment is best for a video podcast?

Moderators: Mike Volpe and Karen Rubin

Pre-Register
If you are interested in going, you must pre register on the site as they will not be registering people at the door. It costs $50 to attend.

Here's some info from the site:
If you're wondering what's next in social media, there's no better place to find out than at PodCamp, regardless of whether you're just getting started or you're a veteran practitioner. Unlike other conferences which are just talking head affairs, PodCamp gives you the opportunity to learn, share, and grow your skills at any level, helping your community as it helps you.

This year, we're aiming to answer the question of what's next - what's next for podcasting, blogging, social media, and the crazy 2.0 world we live in. We're featuring sessions specifically focused on your questions and the answers to them - provided not just by "experts" but by your peers and colleagues as we all learn, share, and grow our social media skills.

Take a look at some of the discussion topics:

- Social media and charitable causes: are you a Gates or a Buffet?
- What can social media do for education?
- How does social media figure into the future of documentary film?
- How do you start this podcasting thing?
- How can we throw traditional media professionals a social media lifeline?
- How do you measure your social media efforts effectively?

Do you have these questions too? Do you have answers to these questions? Be at PodCamp Boston!

My Refrigerator

My 1st 12seconds 12cast from iPhone 3GS, My Refrigerator. on 12seconds.tv

This was a test of the new 12seconds iPhone app.

I shot a 12 second video of my refrigerator. I think I'm going to need to replace this one soon, but can't find one like it that has shelving in a bottom freezer. All the new refrigerators have bins on the bottom. Seems inefficient to me.

If you know of a refrigerator that like the one I currently have, I'd love to know about it.

Also, the current depth is 29" with the handle and the counter is around 25". I'd like one with a depth closer to 25".
